Coronavirus deep cleaning: Preparing your office for the new normal
The coronavirus has impacted every industry in the UK. It is likely that your office has been functioning very differently to usual over the past few months and transitioning back to ‘normal’ can seem daunting. But, we are here to help.
As you think about welcoming staff back to their desks and getting business back on track, it is important to consider what measures you need to take to provide a safe working environment. This is likely to mean new procedures to ensure social distancing as well as office deep cleaning.
Although a challenge unlike many you may have faced before, if you get it right your staff will feel safe, comfortable and ready to get back to business as usual. That is good for them, you and your bottom line.
So, where do you start?
Signs and one-way systems
The first thing to do is work out how to minimise the risk of people spreading the virus directly. With that in mind, it is important for staff to observe social distancing in line with government advice. This may mean you need to re-plan your office space so that people can sit further apart. It is worth considering how staff move around the office and if you need to implement a one-way system. If so, this should be clearly marked with signage.
Also, think about how and when people will take breaks and ensure there is space available for them to do this safely.
Check with the latest guidelines to see if you should be offering PPE. This is likely to depend on the kind of business you run. If you do need to supply PPE for your staff, you will need to establish exactly what you need and where to get it. Talk to governing bodies for advice.
When people return it is a good idea to provide briefings for your staff, ensuing they are aware of and understand the changes. This is also an opportunity for you to make sure they are happy and for them to raise any concerns.
Touch point cleaning
Once you have worked out any changes to work life, the next thing to pay close attention to is cleaning.
Remember that offices have a lot of touch-points. These are surfaces which are frequently touched and are potentially high-risk areas for spreading coronavirus. These touch-point surfaces will vary from business to business but are likely to include:
- Computer keyboards
- Staff room facilities
- Door handles
In addition to your usual cleaning routine:
- Clean touch-point areas at least once per day using a commercial disinfecting wipe, detergent and water, and commercial antimicrobial products.
- A good rule of thumb is that the more people who have contact with a particular surface, the more often it should be cleaned.
Is office deep cleaning important?
It is extremely important to minimise the risk of spreading coronavirus at your company. Office deep cleaning covers areas you might not usually think of or include in a normal cleaning routine. Done properly, this kind of cleaning ensures the risk of spreading the virus through surface contact is kept as low as possible.
It is a great idea to carry out a deep clean before staff return and at regular intervals. That way you and they are confident that you have done everything possible to eliminate the risk of spreading coronavirus at work.
